Introducing
TT electronics in Energy

Energy and TT electronics

TT electronics designs, develops and manufactures new technologies in support of energy industries that face ever-increasing demand and tighter environmental regulations. We are also helping the industry to deploy new smart grid technologies that will improve the efficiency of distribution networks and reduce energy consumption.

Our components and sensors support the conservation of resources and reduction of energy footprint amongst customers in every sector. Indeed our ability to design, manufacture, and support customers throughout the product life-cycle, depends critically on the ability to implement energy reduction measures and reduce dependency on scarce natural resources on a company-wide basis.

Our focus on quality and high reliability benefits customers in all the energy businesses we work with. From resistors and magnetic devices, through hybrid microcircuits and power modules, to LEDs and optical sensors, we are delivering products that offer greater performance and efficiency over longer and longer operational lifetimes.

TT electronics is the electronics partner of choice: with renewable energy and smart grid applications, TT electronics is helping to meet the world's burgeoning demand for power generation.

In the solar energy field, we have developed a new Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) power module, which addresses the growing need for management of Photovoltaic Cell assembly. Our advanced interconnection systems ensure reliable operation of solar PV arrays.

As well as switching and power management circuitry, solutions for wind power generation include sensors and control for turbines.

Our resistor and isolator product lines offer a robust solution for today’s increasing demands for power supplies. We also provide magnetic solutions for DC-AC inverter applications which enable our customers to provide a reliable product in the high power/high voltage environment.

TT electronics' current and voltage sensing capabilities provide circuit breaker applications the ability to efficiently distribute energy throughout commercial and residential grids.  Optical isolators can also provide isolation between signals for both safety and signal clarity on the lines.

The performance, durability and extreme environment capability of our power modules and connectors make TT electronics the clear choice for oil and gas exploration.

With today's spotlight focused even more sharply on drill rig safety, the regulatory requirements are stricter than ever, particularly in relation to ultra-extreme temperature, shock, vibration and pressure performance.

As one of the few vendors to meet these exacting requirements, our down-hole-capable power modules, connectors and directional sensors deliver reliable results at temperatures in excess of 230°C.

Reflective Switch for RPM Sensing in Wind Turbines

Providing alternative energy design engineers with a means of reliably and accurately detecting the speed of wind turbines, the OPB732 Series long distance infrared reflective switch has been employed in a 6kW wind turbine for RPM sensing. Placed at the turbine rotor, the switch is

used internally to sense RPMs, and that data is then transmitted to a customer-accessible website via GPRS.

The ability to accurately monitor turbine RPMs is crucial for their safe and efficient operation and with its non-contact design, this product provides the reliability and accuracy necessary.

In addition to wind turbines, the OPB732 reflective switch is ideal for use in assembly line and machine automation, equipment security, door sensor, machine safety, end of travel sensor, and non-contact reflective object sensor applications.

    SiC for High Temperature Applications

TT electronics’ silicon carbide power devices bring together the special attributes of SiC with our advanced packaging technologies. The new family includes an ultra-fast recovery power rectifier, five-lead Schottky rectifier diode bridge, 660V and 1200 Schottky rectifiers and a 1200V SiC power JFET.

This technology enables high temperature operation, with junction temperatures up to 230°C, enabling devices to operate in harsher environments with less cooling.  In addition, higher-performance designs are possible thanks to the increased power dissipation, in turn leading to smaller product footprints and less complex, more cost-competitive, implementations.  Fully screened and qualified devices are available now with the assurance of full traceability.

Photovoltaic modules produce a variable-voltage dc from sunlight on the panels which is then inverted to ac for the power grid.

There are two types of inverters, string inverters or micro inverters. The latter is more efficient because it uses maximum power point tracking (MPPT) which compensates for environmental conditions that affect power output such as shading, debris or snow lines. Each panel typically has one micro inverter. The micro inverter converts dc voltage to ac voltage It often uses a buck-boost switch mode topology that requires an efficient high current inductor as part of the output filter that smooth the signal output. The power losses of the inductor are critical for overall circuit efficiency in this application.

The HA55 inductor series offers low power losses, high current ratings with high energy storage ability. The small footprint makes it easy to accommodate the most challenging board layout. Inductance values are available to 50uH with current ratings to 41 Amps.
